The public can now view the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s Oahu Destination Management Action Plan, which says the agency will work to “decrease the total number of visitors to Oahu.”
HTA’s Board of Directors approved this and other DMAP actions at the July 29 board meeting. The Oahu DMAP was posted on the HTA website, bit.ly/3DD1EiW.
“Decrease the total number of visitors to Oahu to a manageable level by controlling the number of visitor accommodations and exploring changes in land use, zoning and airport policies”, is the main anchor action from Oahu’s DMAP.
The DMAP also focuses on several other key actions that the community, visitor industry and other sectors deem necessary over a three-year period. The establishment of a regenerative tourist levy, the creation of reservation systems for natural and cultural sites, the management of car use by visitors and the expansion and support of “Buy Local” programs have also been key actions.
The plan also hopes to attract more respectful visitors by implementing a pre- and post-arrival communications program and developing marketing programs to attract “positive impact travelers who prioritize the environment, culture and investment in our local community”.
“We appreciate the residents of Oahu who participated in the DMAP process and passionately brought their diverse perspectives, discussed various challenges related to tourism in their neighborhoods, and helped develop an action plan necessary for the well-being of the community,” said John De Fries. , President and CEO of HTA. “It’s about continuing the collaboration and moving forward together towards malama, this cherished place and with each other, as the people of Oahu want.”
