Car rental to Mauna Kea Only four wheel drive vehicles are allowed! Only one rent-a-car company allows you to drive their four wheel drive car to the top of Mauna Kea. HARPER RENT-A-CAR $ 105-155/day WEBSITE Keep in mind that even healthy individuals may develop adverse health symptoms (dizziness, light headedness, etc.) sometimes, due to the extremely thin air up there. It can be dangerous if it happens to the driver. I've been up there close to 100 X :-). The Landy has a unique emergency brake, it's directly connected to the main shaft. Even if the main brakes lose all 4 brake pads and all the brake fluid in the hydraulic system it still stops the car. It's not a negligible factor on these extremely steep slopes!
