Should you be concerned with hurricanes, tidal waves (tsunami),
sharks, mosquitoes, snakes, earthquakes, large predators, etc.?
Advice:
HURRICANES tend to avoid the Big Island, no scientific proof why.
TSUNAMIS are discussed elsewhere in detail. If you hear the siren
and you're close to the ocean, run for higher ground, fast as you can.
SHARKS attacks are very rare, especially close to beaches.
Avoid where streams flow in the ocean and don't swim at sunset.
MOSQUITOES are usually just a nuisance, but periodically
there're outbreaks of potentially lethal dengue fever carried by them.
SNAKES are nonexistent on the Big Island.
EARTHQUAKES are quite common because of the volcano.
Miniature ones happen several times a minute (not noticeable) and
a fairly big one hits every 5 years, or so.
LARGE PREDATORS are nonexistent on the islands, because
large mammals in general cannot make the over 2000 mile journey.
MAJOR DANGER TO TOURISTS: Teenagers trying hard to emulate
speeding mainland drivers :-).
