"Onopa'a" means "steadfast" in Hawaiian and is the motto of the
Sovereignty Movement. They claim, the monarchy was overthrown
illegally with the help of the U.S. Government. The opponents claim,
it was a revolution and revolutions follow their own laws. U.S. troops
landed, indeed, but they had routinely before. They didn't physically 
interfere with the events. U.S. President Cleveland declared the takeover
illegal, refused annexation and worked for years trying to restore the
monarchy. Neither the Provisional Government, nor the Republic of
Hawai'i, nor Annexation were approved by popular vote, but some 
half a century later statehood was...overwhelmingly.
