Kilauea was temperamental first, outbursts were followed by quiet periods. The lava flowed a little, then stopped, then flowed again, but never got too far. One day it changed, there were no more fireworks, the lava was flowing slowly, but continuously. That was a deadly combination. It soon reached the first village, then others and finally reached the ocean. It's been like that ever since.
