The lava flow was approaching the outskirts of Hilo. The situation was
desperate, even the U.S. Air Force tried to divert its course by 
bombing it, to no avail. Then it suddenly stopped. As I'm writing this
in 2002, the volcano is trembling again and a new eruption is a matter
of when, not a matter of if.
