Captain John Kidwell founded the first pineapple plantation, but failed, because of lack of either fast transportation or preserving technology. James Dole, just a few years later, was a little luckier. He's plowing his first pineapple field on O'ahu in this photo (on the right). It didn't take long before he bought almost the entire Island of Lanai. "The Pineapple Island" is still the nickname of Lanai and the Dole Company still owns most of it.
