Princess Ka'iulani was the daughter of a Scottish father and a 
Hawaiian mother. She wanted to be a modern, highly educated, 
enlightened monarch. She was studying in England, when the
news came, that the Provisional Government deposed the queen.
She hurried to Washington and persuaded President Cleveland 
not to recognize the Provisional Government. When eventually all 
her efforts failed, she moved back to Honolulu. 
After a short illness, she died at the age of twenty three.
