Photo of burning chinatown

A couple of weeks before the turn of the century, an outbreak of bubonic
plague occurred in the Chinatown district of Honolulu. The authorities
ordered a quarantine, mass fumigations and the burning down of
infected houses. The wind picked up and one such house fire went
out of control. When it was finally over, six square blocks or thirty acres
were completely flattened.
