After an aborted attempt by about a hundred of her followers, the queen was charged, tried and convicted of "misprision of treason" (failure to notify authorities of treason). She was sentenced to five years of hard labor, but spent only eight months under house arrest at Iolani Palace, before she was released. Later, in exchange for pardons for all her convicted followers, she abdicated the throne.
