To the shock and dismay of the annexationists, the newly inaugurated
U.S. President Cleveland declared the takeover illegal and urged them to
restore the monarchy. In response, they declared the Republic of Hawai'i. 
Sanford Dole (in the middle with white beard) was elected president.
