After about forty years, King Kalakaua literally gave Hawaiians back their own culture, hula dancing and surfing. Surfing wasn't outright outlawed before, but it was considered "a waste of time".
The annual hula festival and competition is held in Hilo on the Big Island. It's named after the king, the "Merrie Monarch Festival".
It starts on Easter Sunday and lasts about a week.
It's the single most important cultural event in Hawai'i.
