King Kalakaua the "Merrie Monarch" was elected by the legislature. And merry he was! He loved music, poetry, food, drinking, gambling, traveling and a lot more. He spoke four languages, played on several musical instruments, wrote philosophy. He called his missionary tutors "our miserable bigoted community" and brought hula dancing back. In this famous photo he's entertaining Robert Louis Stevenson, author of "Treasure Island". Judging by the height of the maids in the background, it's obvious that everybody's sitting on the floor (as was the custom)... ...including the king.
