Lot Kamehameha ruled as Kamehameha V and was the last direct ascendant of Kamehameha the Great. Sugar production increased dramatically, while the decline of whaling started. Hawai'i became more and more dependant on sugar. He proposed a reciprocity treaty to Washington: Free usage of Pearl Harbor in exchange for no duty on sugar. The timing looked perfect, the north was cut off from southern sugar because of the Civil War. It didn't materialize in his lifetime. He named no successor, so the legislature would elect future kings after him. His most enduring legacy is the Royal Hawaiian Band, he established and is still playing today.
