King Kamehameha V

Lot Kamehameha ruled as Kamehameha V and was the last direct
ascendant of Kamehameha the Great. Sugar production increased
dramatically, while the decline of whaling started. Hawai'i became more
and more dependant on sugar. He proposed a reciprocity treaty to
Washington: Free usage of Pearl Harbor in exchange for no duty on
sugar. The timing looked perfect, the north was cut off from southern
sugar because of the Civil War. It didn't materialize in his lifetime.
He named no successor, so the legislature would elect future kings
after him. His most enduring legacy is the Royal Hawaiian Band,
he established and is still playing today.
