The British had sailed out in peace, but had to return soon because of a broken mast. This aroused the suspicion of the hosts (after all gods don't come and go daily). One night a landing cutter was stolen and the British demanded its return. They blockaded the exit from the bay. When a canoe tried to leave, they opened fire. In the ensuing battle captain Cook himself, four of his men and numerous natives died. Adding to the tragedy, this confirmed the natives' suspicion that he was just a mortal, not a god.
