Pele the goddess of the volcano
There's nobody more popular on the island she is. She lives
in the crater of Halema'uma'u, but she frequently shows up
all over the island. She usually wears a white gown
and her big white dog is with her. She likes gin and
she smokes cigars. She's quite temperamental,
as could be expected from a volcano goddess.
The most famous legend surrounding her is the one about
the naupaka flower. The flowers seem to be cut in half, which is
quite unusual in nature. There're two varieties, the mountain naupaka
and the beach naupaka. Legend has it, that Pele had amorous desires
for a young man in a small village. The young man had a fiance and
refused her. Pele was outraged and the couple had to flee.
One of them ran toward the sea, the other ran toward the mountain.
The goddess of the mountain and the goddess of the sea
turned them into flowers, to hide them from Pele's rage.
They've never met since.
