Lava tree among real trees

When the lava overruns a forest, the cool, moist tree trunks cool it
down and it hardens almost instantly. Later, the flow stops and the hot
fluid lava is drained, but the hardened part around the trunk stays,
forming a "lava tree" around the real tree. Can you tell it apart from the
real trees? Clue: It's in the very middle.
