Our first stop on the Hamakua Coast is Laupahoehoe. This side of the island is synonymous with sugar cane, the railway and tsunamis. This unassuming looking house on the mauka side (toward the mountain) used to be the house of the railway master. The line streched from Honokaa to Hilo and the trains carried sugar cane and passengers. The Belt Road, you're driving on today, follows the exact route of what once was the Hilo Consolidated Railroad.
